The Indian National Congress on Tuesday said the upcoming Koridang by-election is crucial for restoring an effective opposition in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, asserting that the absence of opposition has weakened democratic accountability in the state.

Addressing a press conference in Kohima, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, Member of Parliament and AICC In-charge of Nagaland, said the bypoll is “not merely about electing a representative,” but about ensuring checks and balances in governance.

The party has fielded T Chalukumba Ao as its candidate, with senior leaders campaigning in the constituency. Ulaka said the party has received an encouraging response from the public during campaign visits.

Condemning recent incidents of violence in the constituency, he said there is no place for violence in a democracy and urged authorities to ensure a free and fair election without inducement or intimidation.

On policy issues, Ulaka raised concerns over the lack of clarity surrounding the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA), calling for concrete steps and timelines for its implementation. He also flagged the delay in the Foothill Road project, describing it as a critical infrastructure priority for the state.

The Congress leader further pointed to challenges in the implementation of MGNREGA, including low wage rates and delays in fund allocation, which he said have affected rural livelihoods.

Also addressing the media, Meghachandra Singh said the by-election presents an opportunity to restore democratic balance, alleging that the absence of opposition has allowed governance without adequate scrutiny.

The Congress leaders appealed to voters in Koridang to support their candidate, stating that it would strengthen democratic institutions and accountability in the Assembly.
