With a vision to empower women and promote beauty as a professional skill, Moakumla, 29, is set to launch her own beauty training centre, Kumla Make-Up Academy, in Tongdentsuyong Ward, Mokokchung.
A graduate from the Class of 2018, Moakumla has always been fascinated by fashion and beauty but was initially unsure about turning it into a career. “I was in a dilemma for a long time,” she admitted.
It was in 2024 that she finally decided to pursue her passion, enrolling in a professional makeup course at makeupbyAnnalia Academy in Dimapur. That step, she said, planted the seed for opening her own studio or academy someday.
One of her most formative experiences came when she conducted a three-day grooming workshop in Noklak under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme. “Many of the girls didn’t even know basic grooming techniques. That experience made me want to do more,” she recalled.
Realizing the lack of formal beauty training academies in Mokokchung, Moakumla decided to upgrade her skills further. She travelled to Bangkok, Thailand, to undergo an internationally certified course in makeup artistry at SM Academy.
“After completing the course, I felt even more motivated,” she said. “Being a makeup artist is now the career I’ve fully chosen.”
Her academy will offer a 7-day professional makeup course, starting July 14, with only eight seats available. The course will cover a wide range of styles including Korean, Thai, Douyin, American, and Indian bridal makeup, along with modules on hairstyling, colour analysis, content creation, and marketing skills to find clients.
Classes will be held from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and participants will receive an authorized certificate and a bridal portfolio, along with refreshments.
Looking ahead, she hopes to introduce self-makeup classes tailored for working women in Mokokchung.
