Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nagaland University, Zunheboto, conducted an input distribution program on 1 September in Lotsu village under Sanis Block and Renthan Village under Bhandari Block, Wokha district, Nagaland, sponsored by ICAR, New Delhi, with the aim of improving the socio-economic condition of farming communities.

In the initial phase, before distributing Rainbow Rooster poultry birds, farmers received training in Poultry Production and Management by Dr Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, Principal Scientist and Head. The training was crucial to ensure the success of the poultry production program, enabling farmers to generate income within 3-4 months of rearing these birds.

 

Additionally, farmers received training on areca nut Cultivation and Management, with a specific focus on various pests affecting areca nut and other major crops. Wapangtoshi Longkumer, Chief Technical Officer, Plant Protection, led this training. Areca nut plantation aimed at effectively utilizing available land and creating a stable source of income after 4-5 years of planting, an update received here said.

 

In total, 96 farmers from Lotsu village received 2000 Arecanut saplings, 1000 Rainbow Rooster poultry birds, along with bio-pesticides and fertilizers. Furthermore, 40 farmers from Renthan village were provided with 1000 areca nut saplings and 500 Rainbow Rooster poultry birds.

 

It is anticipated that villagers will generate a substantial income by selling these birds within 3-4 months, in addition to producing high-quality meat and eggs after 7-8 months, the update added.
