In alignment with the national effort to bolster Indian agriculture, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Phek (ICAR–NRC on Mithun, Medziphema), under the aegis of ICAR-ATARI Zone VII, Umiam, has initiated an intensive awareness and outreach programme under the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan (VKSA). Conducted in collaboration with various line departments and scientists from SAS Medziphema, the campaign is being carried out from May 29 to June 12, reaching remote and ecologically sensitive villages in Phek and Meluri districts.

Launched nationally on May 29, 2025, by Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the campaign aims to mobilize rural farming communities toward sustainable, low-input agricultural practices.

With a core focus on Natural Farming (NF), VKSA promotes climate-resilient agriculture, nutritional security, and indigenous crop varieties. KVK Phek has been reaching some of the most inaccessible and underserved villages, overcoming monsoon challenges and poor road conditions. Field teams comprising agricultural scientists, extension workers, and technical staff have been engaging directly with farmers, local leaders, and community institutions across the districts.

As of June 6, the campaign had successfully covered 72 villages in Phek district. Each village visit featured awareness sessions and interactive farmer group discussions addressing topics such as Natural Farming practices, ecological benefits of traditional landraces, soil health management, use of bio-inputs, government schemes for farmers, and the role of indigenous knowledge in ensuring food and nutritional security.

The initiative emphasized the importance of region-specific, ecologically sound, and culturally relevant farming models. Farmers were encouraged to share personal experiences, innovative practices, and the challenges they face. This exchange fostered mutual learning and strengthened trust between the scientific community and local stakeholders.

Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Head of KVK Phek, reported positive community feedback:

“Despite the difficult access, people are eager to learn and adopt methods that are both traditional and scientifically sound. This campaign is not just about awareness; it’s about co-developing solutions for sustainable agriculture rooted in local realities,” he said.

KVK Phek intends to expand the campaign in the coming weeks, with a continued emphasis on climate-resilient farming, youth involvement, and enhancing women’s participation in local food systems.
