Zunheboto, 10 November (MTNews): To improve the socio-economic conditions of farming communities, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Nagaland University, Zunheboto, is spearheading a transformative initiative focused on potato cultivation. Recognizing the critical role of potatoes as a staple in every household and a vital source of nutrition, the program aims to bolster production and empower local farmers.

Potatoes, known for their versatility and high demand, offer a nutritional profile that includes 0.1 gm of fat, 10 mg of sodium, 21 gm of total carbohydrates, 2.5 gm of protein, 15 mg of calcium, 1.1 mg of iron, and 535 mg of potassium per 100 gm. To address the growing demand and elevate potato farming in the region, KVK has launched a sponsored program in collaboration with the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.

Under this initiative, a total of 8000 kgs of high-quality potato seeds, specifically the Kufri Jyoti variety, were distributed to farmers in key areas, including Keltomi in Aghunato, Tichipami, and Surumi in Suruhoto, and Aotsaklilmi in Atoizu block on 10 November. The Kufri Jyoti variety is renowned for its exceptional yield potential of 20 tonnes per hectare and resistance to both late and early blight diseases, ensuring a robust and disease-resistant crop for local farmers.

The primary objective of this program is to raise awareness among the farming community about the importance of quality potato production and encourage the preservation of seeds for subsequent seasons. By promoting the use of good quality seeds, the initiative aims to reduce disease and pest infestations, leading to bumper harvests and subsequently increasing the income and profitability of local farmers.
