Vehicular movement along NH 202 remained completely closed on Thursday and Friday as contractors worked to clear landslide debris and undertake restoration at KM 14 between Longsa Junction and Dikhu Bridge along NH 202, under the supervision of the PWD (NH) and Longsa Village Council. More than 60 vehicles, mostly commercial trucks and tankers, were stranded as a result of the landslide, some of them since August 25.

The SDO of PWD (NH), Chare sub-division, Tuensang, who was on-site supervising the clearing and restoration work, said that the stretch of the highway measuring roughly 100 meters was a perennial sinking area and that the most recent major landslide had completely blocked the road. The elders of the Longsa Village Council, who were also at the site, concurred that the most recent landslide and road subsidence occurred on August 22 and 23.

The SDO observed that the cleaning and restoration work was unlikely to be completed by Friday. He also advised small vehicle drivers to use the alternative Chare-NH-2 Mokokchung road, stating that the intermediate-lane road is safe for travel and significantly shorter, at only 19 km.

The SDO further stated that the restoration work might take at least another day. The road remained closed at the time of filing this report.

The SDO also noted that some drivers were not adhering to travel restrictions, causing inconvenience to workers and delaying the restoration efforts.

Over 60 vehicles, mostly trucks and tankers are stranded since August 25 as the landslide blocked NH 202.

It was observed that workers had elevated the sinking area by about 20 feet and compacted it with road rollers. Boulders for reinforcing the newly compacted road were brought from Ungma and Chungliyimti, as no boulders were available nearby.

NH 202 serves as the main road for the Tuensang, Noklak, and Shamator districts. Elders of the Longsa Village Council, led by Chairman Akangjungshi Tatar, were on-site overseeing the restoration work. The affected stretch of the road falls under the jurisdiction of Longsa village in Mokokchung district. However, NH 202 falls under the purview of PWD (NH) Tuensang Division and is managed by the PWD (NH) Chare sub-division.

The Longsa Village Council has been coordinating with the contractors, PWD (NH), and the district administration since the recent landslide occurred.

Limaakum Jamir, Tatar, and Onger Salang Aola of Longsa village, who were also at the site, said that the first landslide this rainy season occurred on August 7, rendering the road impassable for vehicles by August 26. They have been coordinating with the authorities and volunteering to oversee debris clearing and restoration work since then, with some village council members deputed daily.

Longsa Village Council elders said they have been on-site assisting the stranded travellers all along. Since the stranded vehicles were within Longsa village territory, the village council elders said it was their responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of the stranded truckers and travelers. A village council elder also fed approximately 150 stranded individuals on the evening of August 27.

Meanwhile, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Mokokchung, led by Deputy Commissioner Thsuvisie Phoji and Superintendent of Police Vesupra Kezo, visited the landslide area, located 14 km from Mokokchung town. The DDMA Mokokchung also provided immediate relief materials to the drivers and occupants of more than 60 goods-laden trucks that had been stranded for the last five days.
