From the quiet lanes of Marepkong Ward in Mokokchung to the competitive arena in Hyderabad, Lanuakum Longkumer has carved out a story defined by discipline, persistence and quiet ambition. The young athlete from Nagaland has brought national recognition to the state by winning two gold medals at the 13th National Kettlebell Sports Championship Grand Prix and the 8th WKSF International Trophy 2026, held from April 3 to 5.

Competing in demanding endurance-based events, Lanuakum secured gold in the 16 kg kettlebell snatch and the 20 kg one arm long cycle, both performed over 10 minutes. His achievement is particularly significant as kettlebell sport, or Girevoy Sport, remains relatively unfamiliar in the region.

A banker by profession, Lanuakum has balanced his career with a deep commitment to fitness. Introduced to kettlebell training in 2019, he gradually built it into a disciplined routine. “Representing Nagaland gives me a sense of pride and hope that there is tremendous potential in our state,” he said, adding that more can be done to promote such sports locally.

Raised in a modest family as the eldest of three siblings, he credits his upbringing for instilling values of perseverance and hard work. He also acknowledged the role of his mentors, Parag Mhetre and Sandeep Sharma, both world champions, in shaping his journey.

Beyond kettlebell sport, Lanuakum is also an accomplished runner. As he prepares for upcoming competitions, including the WKSF Open Asia and Oceania Championship in October, his journey continues to inspire a new generation to pursue excellence beyond conventional sporting paths.
