Marking the International Day of Biological Diversity, environmental organization LEMSACHENLOK led a community-driven tree plantation initiative across five villages in Longleng district. The event was held in alignment with this year’s global theme, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” and emphasized the role of grassroots action in ecological restoration and biodiversity preservation.
LEMSACHENLOK, which works to promote environmental conservation, sustainable development, and the empowerment of indigenous communities in Nagaland, described the initiative as a reaffirmation of its philosophy: that conservation must go beyond preservation and include proactive efforts such as afforestation.
“As we celebrate biodiversity, we must remember that true harmony with nature comes from action,” the organization stated. It added that afforestation is both a sustainable solution to climate challenges and a promise to future generations.
The plantation drive saw enthusiastic participation from residents of the five villages, who planted a wide variety of tree species. The initiative underscored the importance of local engagement in meeting broader environmental goals and highlighted the long-term ecological and economic benefits such projects can offer. Among the trees planted were species chosen for their capacity to filter pollutants, improve groundwater levels, fix nitrogen in the soil, and provide both food and medicinal value, supporting not just human needs but also wildlife habitats.
LEMSACHENLOK stated that these multi-functional plantations will strengthen the region’s biodiversity while also contributing to sustainable livelihoods.
The organization extended its gratitude to the participating communities for their commitment to environmental stewardship and reiterated its mission to expand community-based conservation efforts throughout Nagaland and beyond.
