Lenjem Hospital has introduced Phacoemulsification, commonly known as phaco, a cataract surgery that utilizes ultrasound technology to break down and remove the eye’s lens. This procedure is regarded as one of the safest and most effective methods for treating cataracts.

According to Dr Imsu, proprietor of Lenjem Hospital, the new machine, imported from Japan and Germany, makes Lenjem Hospital the second district in Nagaland to offer cataract surgeries using this technique.

“We hope that introduction of phaco will enhance public convenience because previously, patients had to travel to places like Jorhat or Dimapur for cataract surgery,” said Dr Imsu, adding that now they can receive treatment in their hometown, saving both time and money.

Phaco is a day-care surgery, allowing patients to return home on the same day of the procedure. Each surgery is performed by a specialist. The cost of phaco surgery varies based on the lens required, typically ranging from 13,000 to 20,000 rupees.

Further, Ayushman card holders can benefit from reduced rates according to the program’s guidelines.
