Mokokchung, March 22 (MTNews): After winning the gold medal in the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts India (GAMMAI) National Championship, 2021, held in Mumbai, the 22-year-old, Limasunep Imchen has been selected to represent India at the GAMMA World Championship 2021 (2022) from March 23 to 27 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The event was supposed to be held in Germany the previous year but was postponed due to challenges posed by German covid-19 rules.
Limasunep of Mangmetong Village is an athlete from Dimapur and is also currently a student of Dimapur Government College. He was declared as the National Champion two times and represented India at GAMMA Asian Championship held at Kyrgyzstan in 2021 where he finished as a quarter finalist.
Lima is a trainee from ‘The Combat Academy’, a private mixed martial arts gym based in Dimapur. Talking to Mokokchung Times, he expressed his gratitude to the various communities along with the student community who supported him in his journey both morally and financially.
Speaking about his fundraising campaign, he explained that since MMA is not an Olympic sport, there is no funding or support of any form from either the state or the central government.
“Because MMA is not supported even by the Indian Government, I did not want to pressure the government,” he responded when asked if he ever approached the government for help.
“I am from a middle-class family and hence, I do not have the luxury to travel abroad every time. Even the previous time, I was able to manage it only through various community fundings,” he said.
Expressing his gratitude for the support and love shown to him, he urged the youths to follow their dreams and work hard on it for it shall turn into reality.
