Kohima, 16 September: The Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP), Kohima, in collaboration with the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) and the Department of Economics and Political Science, KROS College, organised a consumer awareness programme on the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumer” at Kevi Hall, KROS College, on September 16.

Speaking at the programme, NSLSA Member Secretary Neiko Akami highlighted the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which seeks to protect consumer interests and provide mechanisms for timely settlement of consumer disputes.

He said consumers have rights to safety, information, choice, education and redressal, among others. He also explained that complaints can be filed against unfair trade practices, defective goods, deficient services, excessive charges and misleading advertisements, including in the digital sphere.

LMCP Joint Controller Shiloh Kath said the department works to protect consumers through enforcement of legal metrology laws, including verification and stamping of weights and measures.

“We also implement Package Commodities Rules, 2011,” Kath said, adding that these require declarations regarding weight, volume, quantity, manufacturer, importer, packer and maximum retail price.

Assistant Controller (HQ) Shiekhozo urged students to become informed consumers and approach the department when they encounter unfair trade practices or defective products.
