Mokokchung, 19 January (MTNews): Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland, Tokheho Yepthomi has stirred debate by expressing his desire for the Government of India to reconsider the relevance of Article 371 (A) in Nagaland. Yepthomi, speaking during the book inauguration ceremony by Dr Heroka K Yepthomi at St Joseph University in Dimapur on 18 January, highlighted the adverse effects of what he claims to be the misapplication of Article 371 (A) on the state’s development, asserting that it has contributed to Nagaland’s status as one of the poorest states in the country.
The MP drew attention to the contrast with states like Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, citing their advancements in the fields of power and oil. In contrast, he lamented Nagaland’s predicament, waiting to harness its resources “after sovereignty.”
He viewed that no matter what people say, “If we do not have an economy, we cannot survive”.
The MP also went on to question how the elected civic members will run their municipal and town councils without revenue as there will be no taxation.
“How much will the Government of India give to those civic bodies in a year?” he asked.
The MP accused politicians of manipulating public sentiment by advocating for the preservation of Article 371 (A) as a means to evade taxes on substantial properties and assets. In contrast, he argued that taxation would promote transparency in governance.
“At least on commercial buildings, there should be a nominal taxation to start with,” he asserted.
Clarifying his stance, the MP also said that he did not advocate for the outright removal of Article 371 (A) but suggested its judicious use for specific purposes.
