Longleng, 15 September: Members of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Longleng, led by Deputy Commissioner W Manpai Phom, conducted a spot verification of the landslide-affected stretch of the Changtongya-Longleng Road (NH-702) on September 15. The inspection team was accompanied by the Mokokchung District Administration, represented by the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Changtongya.
The road stretch between Chainage 5+785 and 6+050 was severely damaged following persistent rainfall on the night of September 11, completely disrupting vehicular movement. The Changtongya-Longleng Road serves as a vital link for Longleng district, connecting the district headquarters with the rest of the State and facilitating the movement of people and essential commodities.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), along with executing agency Nithin Sai Construction (NSC), has been undertaking debris clearance and restoration work since September 12. However, continued rainfall and recurring mudslides and landslides have hampered the work. Local issues at the site have also been resolved through coordination with the Mokokchung District Administration.
In view of the situation, the DDMA has advised light vehicles to use the alternate Tangha-Kangching-Merangkong Road until normal traffic is restored on NH-702. The alternate route is also being maintained by the DDMA.
The latest disruption comes as Longleng continues to recover from extensive damage caused by rainfall, landslides and related incidents since July 19. The fresh landslide has further strained connectivity and ongoing disaster response efforts.
Heavy vehicle movement has remained completely suspended since September 12, raising concerns over the supply of essential commodities, particularly fuel transported by oil tankers. Prolonged disruption could place additional pressure on supplies if connectivity is not restored soon.
The public has been advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel along the affected stretch and follow advisories issued by the district administration and DDMA.
