The Longtrok Senden Ungma celebrated its 38th edition of Cultural Extravaganza on a grand scale on Monday, 31 July. The vibrant event showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Ao community and the essence of Ao Naga festivals through an array of traditional folk songs, mesmerizing dances, and captivating short plays based on Ao folklores at the Yimtsüngta Arok Sapang, Ungma.
The Cultural Extravaganza witnessed enthusiastic participation from various cultural clubs under the umbrella of Longtrok Senden, with people of all age groups coming together to celebrate and showcase their talents. The atmosphere was brimming with joy and excitement as the audience was treated to a visual spectacle of cultural expressions that have been passed down through generations.
Gracing the event as the Special Guest was Imyapangla Jamir, Project Officer of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Mokokchung. In her address to the audience, Jamir emphasized the importance of cultural events like this in preserving and propagating one’s heritage. She highlighted how such gatherings provided an invaluable opportunity for young individuals to connect with their roots and learn about their culture and traditions.
Jamir further stressed that cultural events also offered a platform for talented young artists to showcase their skills and promote cultural exchange, both within their communities and in urban centers. She spoke passionately about the role of culture in shaping identities and fostering a sense of unity among people. “Culture programs like these remind us of the values that bind us together,” she said.
Preserving culture and tradition, Jamir noted, had become more crucial than ever in the face of rapid modernization and globalization.
Through their songs, dances, folk tales, and lore, the community not only cherished their age-old traditions but also bridged the gap between tradition and the fast-changing world.
Longtrok Senden, a stalwart group in organizing this event, has been dedicating itself to this cultural extravaganza for the past 38 years. The significance of the celebration lies in its mission to exhibit, celebrate, and impart the importance of preserving the precious cultural heritage that defines the Ao people.
