Victims of the natural calamity that struck Mangkolemba town under Mokokchung district on August 11 are yet to receive compensation from the State Disaster Relief Fund even as they have rehabilitated on their own arrangement after their houses were damaged by flashfloods and landslides.

It may be recalled that at least 12 families were either rendered homeless or forced to vacate their homes after heavy rains on August 10 and 11 triggered flashfloods and landslides in Mangkolemba. A total of nine houses were completely damaged while three others were partially damaged in the natural calamity.
The landslides largely happened at Hokiyong Ward while the flashfloods affected Tzutayong Ward mostly. All the streams and rivers around the town overflowed with Ngisameyong river causing much havoc.
A lady whose house was partially damaged in the flashflood said that this was the second time that her house was affected, the last time being in 2015. Most of the periphery of her house was washed away by the flashflood this time.
Another lady, whose kitchen was washed away by the flashflood, said all her building materials were also washed away by the flashflood. She was about to build her new house and had collected the building materials.
A daily wage earner, who was forced to find shelter elsewhere after his house was damaged by the landslides said that the authorities have given Rs.3,000/- each to 10 victims whose houses were damaged in the landslides.
All three of them whom Mokokchung Times got in touch with said that they were given forms to be filled up and submitted for claiming compensation. They said they have submitted the forms to the ADC’s office, Mangkolemba.
