A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was tragically killed in a gun attack by suspected militants at Mongbung village in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Sunday morning, as confirmed by police sources. Additionally, a policeman sustained injuries and has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.

The deceased has been identified as Ajay Kumar Jha, 43, hailing from Bihar. “He suffered bullet injuries to the head and was declared brought-dead upon arrival at the hospital. The injured policeman is currently undergoing treatment and is reported to be out of danger,” stated a police officer familiar with the incident.

In response to the incident, Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed strong condemnation and extended prayers for the swift recovery of the injured through a post on social media platform X.

“I strongly condemn the killing of a CRPF personnel in an attack carried out by an armed group, suspected to be Kuki militants, in Jiribam district today. His supreme sacrifice in the line of duty shall not go in vain.”

“I further extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased soldier, while praying for the speedy recovery of the ones injured during the attack,” Singh said.

Gunfire had reportedly been heard in the village the previous night, indicating heightened tension in the area, officials noted. Following the attack on Sunday, additional security forces have been deployed in Mongbung village from neighboring hill areas to ensure enhanced security measures.

Furthermore, authorities reported that a vehicle belonging to security personnel sustained damage during the gun attack.

Manipur has been rocked by ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year, which has claimed more than 200 lives.
