The Naga People’s Front Ticket distribution ceremony for the upcoming Manipur Assembly Election was held today at the NPF Central Office, Kohima. The NPF will be contesting in 10 Assembly constituencies. NPF leader and former chief minister of Nagaland, TR Zeliang, took to his social media platforms to make the announcement. “I’m optimistic that the 10 NPF candidates would give a good fight and come out successful and be instrumental in the Government formation of Manipur State,” he said. He also exuded hope that the NPF tally would improve this time over the 2017 election results in Manipur, where his party could secure only 4 seats after contesting in 12 assembly constituencies.
NPF is an ally of the BJP led government in Manipur but is contesting the polls on its own. Langhu Paulhring Anal will contest from Chandel seat, D Korungthang Maring is fielded from Tengnoupal. Leishiyo Keishing form Phungyar, Ram Muivah from Ukhrul, Khashim Vashum from Chingai, Khoho Siile Antony from Karong, Losii Dikho from Mao, M Francis Ngajokpa from Tadubi, Awangbow Newmai from Tamei and Khangthuanang Panmei from Tamenglong.
NPF has bases in the hill areas of the state which account for 20 seats, while the Meitei Hindu dominated valley have 40 assembly seats. The Manipur assembly polls will be held in two phases. In the first phase, polling will be held on February 27 in 38 assembly seats, and in the second phase, polling will be held on March 3 in 22 assembly constituencies.
“Once again, I congratulate the candidates on securing the NPF ticket and also wish them all a great success. It is overwhelming to learn that there were many contenders for the party ticket, which goes to show that the Naga People’s Front has taken deep roots in Manipur state,” Zeliang said.
