Leaders from various tribal communities in Manipur issued a joint statement opposing the removal of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border, an India Today report said.
The Union Home Ministry, in February, scrapped the Free Movement Regime between India and Myanmar to ensure the internal security of the country and maintain the demographic structure of India’s northeastern states bordering Myanmar.
A statement issued by leaders from the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), Committee On Tribal Unity (COTU), Indigenous Tribe Advocacy Committee (ITAC), Kuki Impi Chandel (KIC), and Kuki Impi Tengnoupal (KIT) says that the tribal groups of Manipur stand firmly against the removal of the FMR.
“We are opposed to any move to separate or disunite us. In this regard, we are resolute in our opposition to the removal of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border, as this will result in the forced separation of blood brothers on both sides of the border,” the joint statement said.
Claiming that people of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram are also against border fencing and the removal of FMR, the Manipur groups urged “everyone –officials, contractors, and others– to refuse to participate in any FMR-related activity.”
The tribal groups have also opposed the Manipur government’s plans to conduct Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, saying it is clearly an attempt by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to create division among them by pitting them against each other.
They asked the public not to participate in the elections unless their political demands are met.
The tribal groups also condemned the violence persisting for over a year and accused the majority group of ethnic cleansing. They called for continued resilience against oppression.
In view of the fresh violence in the Jiribam region, the tribal groups urged the central government to establish a buffer zone for protection and to consider their demand for Union Territory status.
A protest rally is scheduled for June 24 across multiple districts as a plea for urgent action from the central government to bring a solution to the violence in the state.
