The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced a three-day total shutdown across Naga areas in Manipur from midnight of April 20 to midnight of April 23, in protest against the killing of two Naga civilians.

In a statement, the UNC said all public and private institutions, business establishments, and vehicular movement would remain suspended during the period, except for essential and emergency services.

The decision was taken during a joint emergency meeting of the UNC, All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women’s Union (NWU), and district apex bodies held at Tahamzam on Sunday, following the killing of two civilians.

The victims, identified as Chinaoshang Shokwungnao and Yaruingam Vashum, were killed after being waylaid at TM-Kasom village along National Highway-202, the organisations said.

Condemning the incident, the organisations described the killing of unarmed civilians as a serious act and expressed concern over the security situation in Naga areas. They also questioned the handling of law and order, noting that the incident occurred a day after the visit of the Manipur Chief Minister and Home Minister to Ukhrul district.

The UNC further announced that candlelight vigils would be held on April 23 at 6:30 pm in all Naga district headquarters and in Imphal.

It also stated that Nagas in Manipur would suspend social and economic ties with the Kuki community during the three-day mourning period, in line with customary practices.
