A massive landslide struck Rüzazho Village under Chozuba Sub-Division in Phek district during the midnight of 17 September 2025, blocking the flow of the Tüsürü River and causing extensive damage to nearby paddy and maize fields.
According to Rukuneyi Sapuh, VDB Secretary of Rüzazho Village, incessant rainfall over the past few days triggered the landslide at an unexpected location during the wee hours, disrupting the normal flow of the river. Paddy and maize crops, which were in their ripening stage, were severely affected, with many fields completely submerged under water.
Sapuh stated that paddy fields belonging to more than 25 farmers were damaged, and entire portions of maize fields were washed away. “As per Naga traditions, farmers largely depend on paddy cultivation for their livelihood. This unexpected disaster has deeply affected their lives, leaving them to struggle for sustenance,” he added.
The landslide has also put the annual plantation activities of the farmers at risk, causing further economic loss. Sapuh appealed to the concerned authorities to physically inspect the affected areas and provide compensation to the farmers on humanitarian grounds.
