Mokokchung, 18 August (MTNews): A Training Programme of Tier III on “Local Groundwater related issues and participatory groundwater management” was conducted at Mokokchung College of Teacher Education, Yimyu on 18 August 2023, organized and sponsored by Central Ground Water Board (NER, Guwahati) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, RD & GR.

The program was presided over by Ms Anenuo Pienyu, Scientist C, CGWB, NER. The Guest of Honour, Mr Sutemo Kikon, Executive Engineer, Water Resources Department, Mokokchung, addressed on the issues of water stress faced by India and Nagaland and Mokokchung in particular, initiatives taken by the District Water Resources Department and the need for convergence of different departments for sustainable water conservation.

 

The Chief Guest, Dr T Alemla Longkumer threw light on one of the college’s primary goal of “Conserving the environment” and thereby the augmentation of water source and establishment of Water Recharge reservoir in the college premises. She urged upon each individual to take responsibility in preserving and conserving the natural water resources for our future as water is the elixir of life and without which there can be no social and economic prosperity.

 

Ms Dakshina Rabha, Officer In Charge, Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), State Unit Office, Shillong, Meghalaya, in her presidential address deliberated on the roles and responsibilities of CGWB, NER in imparting training, reporting and documentation of groundwater in North Eastern Region for its augmentation, conservation and preservation for ensuring availability of safe and sustainable water to all. The first session of the program concluded with a vote of thanks by CGWB followed by light refreshment.

 

The technical session was enlightened by the resource persons on the following topics: “Hydrological Concept and Aquifer Information system” by Mr Tiamenba Longshir, AHG, CGWB, NER; “Rain Water Harvesting and Artificial Recharge” by Mr Bipul Vishal, STA (Hg), CGWB, NER; “Water Quality Issues and its impact on human health” by Mr V Kezo, Scientist C, CGWB, NER; “Hydrogeology of Nagaland with special reference to spring water” by Ms Anenuo Pienyu, Scientist C, CGWB, NER.

 

Lastly, Ms Dakshina Rabha concluded the session with a brief summary on the topics covered by all the resource persons.
