The 27th MDFA Trophy 2025 found its new kings on a dramatic evening at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, as debutants Doyang Strikers Mokokchung lifted the title with a hard-fought 2–1 win over Chargers FC in front of a packed and roaring crowd.

New champions of the MDFA Trophy, Doyang Chargers Mokokchung, with MDFA officials and guests at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung, on Saturday, October 25.

In what will go down as one of the most fiercely contested finals in recent years, the Strikers’ ironclad defence and precision proved too much for a spirited Chargers side built around homegrown talent.

The first half saw end-to-end football. Chargers pressed high and pushed the Doyang backline with Benrithung, Sarenbemo, and Pangerkumzuk under pressure early on. But while Chargers had the intensity, they lacked the cutting edge. Striker Longkhoi worked tirelessly up front, yet without a proper playmaker, clear chances were few and far between. At halftime, it was goalless but the tension in the stands was electric.

The breakthrough finally came in the 50th minute. A foul by Yangersosang just outside the box handed Doyang a dangerous free-kick. The initial effort was blocked, but Chargers’ defence momentarily froze and Yami Longvah was quickest to react, smashing the loose ball into the net to send Doyang fans into delirium.

Fifteen minutes later, the stadium erupted again. A sloppy midfield pass from Chargers gifted possession to Horam, who darted through the middle and coolly slotted home to make it 2–0. It was a goal worthy of the final – pace, power, and perfect composure.

Chargers refused to go quietly. In the 81st minute, Illanger’s long-range strike found the top corner, giving them a lifeline and reigniting hope. But Doyang’s “Great Wall” stood firm till the final whistle.

As the referee blew for full time, celebrations exploded across the ground. Doyang Strikers Mokokchung, the debutants, had done the improbable – champions at the first attempt.

The winners walked away with Rs 2,00,000, the running trophy, and citations, while runners-up Chargers FC took home Rs 1,00,000 and trophies of their own.
