In an exhilarating second semifinal match of the ongoing MDFA Trophy 2023, pitting defending champions Telongjem FC against the formidable KSR Team, the packed Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung witnessed a truly incredible day of football, aptly dubbed the ‘final before the final.’
Although the match remained goalless for most of its duration, it was a showcase of football brilliance as some of the state’s biggest names in the sport gathered to vie for a spot in the finals.
The first half of the match saw both teams making decent attempts and displaying excellent control over the field. However, they couldn’t break the deadlock, and the teams headed into the break with a 0-0 scoreline.
The second half brought a dramatic turn of events when an error by Telongjem FC in the box led to KSR Team being awarded a penalty. Rhitsho Mero stepped up to take the crucial spot-kick, but Telongjem’s goalkeeper, Homuka Yeptho, made a perfectly timed dive to deny the goal.
The match continued goalless for most of the second half, with the possibility of going into extra time or even a penalty shootout looming. However, in the 87th minute, Telongjem’s Shuruosul Zhotso managed to head the ball past KSR’s goalkeeper, Eshong Konyak, finding the back of the net. Shurusul Zhotso was substituted in only some minutes before the goal. He capitalized on an assist from H Robinson Khongsai.
The KSR Team rushed to find an equalizer, but with only 4 minutes of extra time added, it was too late. Telongjem FC clinched the match with a lone goal, securing their place in the finals for the third consecutive time.
Telongjem FC will once again face Moanungsang Memorial Sporting Club, setting the stage for a thrilling rematch of last year’s finals, which Telongjem FC won with a score of 2-1.
All eyes are now on the finals, as fans eagerly wait to see if Telongjem can lift the trophy for the third consecutive time or if the 2006 and 2007 champions Moanungsang MSC can make a comeback and claim the championship this year.
