Konyak Students’ Union Mokokchung (KSUM) delivered a commanding performance, defeating NU Lumami 4-1 in the second quarterfinal match of the MDFA Trophy 2024 at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex on Wednesday. KSUM started the match on the front foot, applying relentless pressure on NU Lumami’s defense right from the opening whistle.
Their efforts paid off early, with Naoman Konyak finding the net in the 7th minute to give KSUM the lead. Just 11 minutes later, Naoman struck again, doubling their advantage and leaving NU Lumami reeling. KSUM continued to dominate, and by the 42nd minute, Pangteh Konyak extended their lead to 3-0, seemingly putting the game out of reach for NU Lumami before halftime.
However, NU Lumami skipper Neilie Nagi provided a glimmer of hope for his side by scoring in the 45th minute, reducing the deficit to 3-1 heading into the break. NU Lumami came out stronger in the second half, creating several clear-cut chances but failed to capitalize on their opportunities, with poor finishing costing them dearly.
As the game progressed, KSUM slowed the tempo, protecting their lead. Any hopes of a comeback from NU Lumami were extinguished when N Alei Konyak scored in the 81st minute, restoring KSUM’s three-goal cushion and sealing a 4-1 victory. KSUM now marches into the semi-finals, brimming with confidence and motivation as they aim for the title.
With two more wins standing between them and the MDFA trophy, KSUM has so far in the tournament proven to be the dark horses, getting stronger with each match, and looks poised to be a formidable contender in the final stages of the competition.
KSUM will face off against debutants Team Gilgal in the first semifinal of the tournament on October 26.
