Super Seniors dominate Sports Society Soyim 6-1

Super Seniors FC delivered a dominant performance, securing a resounding 6-1 win over Sports Society Soyim (SSS) in the first match of the second day of the Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) Trophy 2024 here today at Imkongmeren Sports Complex. SSS was left stunned as Super Seniors took control early and never looked back.

Pursunep set the tone for Super Seniors with the opening goal in the 21st minute, followed quickly by Nythung’s strike at the 24th minute. Temjenmeren added another in the 64th minute, putting SSS under immense pressure.

The highlight of the match was an extraordinary hat-trick from Thejasetuo Gwirie, who found the net in the 64th, 80th, and 84th minutes, sealing a convincing victory for his team. Gwirie has been a player at the Gokulam Kerala FC and has also played in Mokokchung at the Dr T Ao Trophy in 2022 as well.

Despite the relentless attack and inevitable defeat, SSS salvaged some pride with a consolation goal by Osen in the 90th minute.

With this emphatic win, Super Seniors solidify their standing in the tournament, while SSS will need to regroup and come back stronger in their upcoming fixtures.

Talking to MT, Thejasetuo Gwirie credited his teammates for the hat-trick. “Without the efforts of my teammates, I wouldn’t have been able to score it,” he said.

While expressing his joy at today’s result, he also said he looks forward to the “more combination” to yield similar results in the remaining matches as well.

On Thursday’s first match, MDFA Trophy 2000 champions Amokmolu SC will lock horns with defending champions Telongjem FC, rekindling memories of past glory in a match that promises to be more than just a game, but a tribute to resilience and nostalgia.

NU Lumami stages comeback to defeat Eastern Wings 4-1

In an intense match between NU Lumami and Eastern Wings, the first half saw high-paced action with both teams creating several scoring opportunities. Eastern Wings took the lead in the 35th minute when Khou C Khiamniungan found the back of the net. NU Lumami had their chances to equalize, but failed to capitalize before halftime.

The second half mirrored the intensity of the first, with both teams attacking well down the wings. NU Lumami finally broke through in the 53rd minute when Atong Wangsa scored the equalizer. A mistake from Eastern Wings’ defense saw NU Lumami quickly pounce, and M Phaowang calmly finished in the 60th minute to give them the lead.

Just seven minutes later, Pranjal Dhatumia extended NU Lumami’s advantage with a well-taken goal, putting them firmly in control. The captain, Neilie, sealed the victory in the 86th minute with a fourth goal, giving NU Lumami a comfortable 4-1 win eventually.

Eastern Wings dominated the first half with excellent coordination between Yamthong, Khou C Khiamniungan, and Chemthong. They appeared decisive, composed, and comfortable, but their inability to convert chances proved to be costly.

In the second half, NU Lumami adjusted their strategy by man-marking Eastern Wings’ forwards, limiting their space and disrupting their wide play. NU Lumami’s superior second-half performance turned the game around, scoring four unanswered goals to complete a remarkable comeback victory. However, the scoreline belies the match, as it was an evenly contested game that every football enthusiast enjoys watching.

Talking to MT, Neilie, captain of NU Lumami, extended his gratitude to their coach ‘Sir Wati’ stating that he has helped them a lot. He added that they even skipped classes for practice and that they practiced in the morning as well as in the evening.

Reflecting on his team’s performance today, he expressed satisfaction but acknowledged areas for improvement. “We have a lot to work on and will aim to address those in the next match,” he stated.
