In a high-energy encounter, Team Gilgal clinched a 2-1 victory over Zonipang SC in dramatic fashion, securing their place in the semifinals of the ongoing MDFA Trophy 2024. From the start, the match saw end-to-end action, with Vinato Achumi of Gilgal emerging as a key figure, relentlessly pressuring Zonipang’s defense in the first half.

Gilgal’s sustained attacking efforts paid off in the first half when a pinpoint cross from the wide area found Pangei Konyak, who headed the ball home to give his team the lead in the 18 minutes mark. Despite Gilgal creating several chances, they were unable to extend their advantage, and the first half ended 1-0.

The second half brought more attacking football from both sides. Zonipang pressed for an equalizer, while Gilgal looked to double their lead, but neither side could find the back of the net during regulation time.

The intensity of the match was such that six players were shown yellow cards by the referee.

As the clock ticked, stoppage time proved to be thrilling as Zonipang pushed for a late equalizer but a misplaced pass allowed Gilgal to launch a lethal counter-attack, with Pangei Konyak scoring his second of the match in the 90+5 minute. Zonipang responded immediately, netting through Moachang in the 90+6 minute, setting up a tense finish. Despite their late surge, Zonipang ran out of time, and Gilgal held on for the 2-1 victory.

Hivika Zhimo, Pangei Konyak, Tongpangnungshi, and Imnazulu of Team Gilgal along with Nungshisashi and Temsuyanger of Zonipang SC were the six players cautioned in the match.

Zonipang will be left to rue their missed chances, especially in the latter stages of the game they failed to convert, while Gilgal marches on to the semifinals, buoyed by Pangei’s brace and their resilient performance.

A debutant team but with a set of seasoned players in their lineup, Team Gilgal will meet the winner of the second quarterfinal match between NU Lumami and Konyak Students’ Union Mokokchung.
