End of the road for KSUM’s title defence
Defending champions Konyak Students’ Union Mokokchung (KSUM) fought their last battle to stay in the MDFA 2025 Trophy on Thursday, facing none other than Team Gilgal, a side widely regarded as one of the top contenders for the title. What followed was a thrilling and intense encounter, ending in a 3–1 victory for Gilgal.
The game took a decisive turn early on. In the 7th minute, a handball inside the box gave Gilgal a penalty opportunity, which Kakhevi Assumi calmly converted to give his team the lead. The attacking duo of Assumi and J Dhale proved formidable, constantly pressing the KSUM defence. Gilgal doubled their advantage in the 20th minute when Sentilong found the net, putting the champions on the back foot.
Despite trailing, KSUM showed resilience. They created several chances – hitting the target at least three times – but could not convert. Midfielder Wangom stood out with a stellar performance, acting as a crucial playmaker and maintaining the team’s fighting spirit.
Gilgal, however, displayed superior rhythm and team coordination. Their relentless attacks were rewarded again in the 42nd minute when J Dhale slotted in their third goal, making it 3–0.
KSUM struck back after halftime, with Leangin finding the net in the 45th minute to give the team a glimmer of hope. The second half saw a spirited push from the defending champions, who threw everything forward in the closing minutes. But Gilgal’s solid defensive wall – anchored by Tongpang Jamir, Merensang Pongen, Salangwati, and Lungpetsing – proved too difficult to break.
In last year’s edition, KSUM defeated Team Gilgal 2-1 in the semifinals on their way to lifting the title in their maiden appearance, overcoming then title holders and three-peat champions Telongjem FC by a solitary goal. However, this year, Team Gilgal not only prevailed over the defending champions KSUM but also effectively knocked them out of the competition.
Following today’s result, Team Gilgal, along with Sports Society Soyim, have booked their berth in the quarterfinals. The two sides will meet on October 17 to decide the table toppers of Pool A.
A draw would see Team Gilgal top the table on goal difference.
