Mecievi Kheiya, a young football player from Jhakhama, Kohima, has become the first-ever Naga player to secure a professional contract and play in one of Thailand’s major divisions by signing with Thai club Thonburi United FC. Kheiya plays as a left-winger.
Having recently joined the club, Kheiya has already represented Thonburi United in two friendly matches. His initial contract will last until the first half of the Thai League 3, with an extension clause contingent on his performance.
The athlete was scouted by Thonburi United staff who visited Kohima earlier this year to conduct the “Nagaland’s Next Top Player” event. This initiative was organized in partnership with the Department of Youth Resources and Sports Nagaland, the Nagaland Football Association, and SC Nagaland.
“Thonburi United is extremely excited to open their doors for Kheiya and hopes to create more opportunities for young Naga talents in the near future,” stated SC Nagaland Thonburi United.
This signing marks a significant milestone for Naga football, opening the door for more young talents from the Northeast to showcase their skills on an international stage.
