Medziphema Sub-division level enforcement committee held a meeting to discuss issues pertaining to the monitoring, regulation, and enforcement of riverbed mining activities in the Chathe River and its tributaries at the ADC’s Conference Hall, Medziphema on 24th November 2025.

The meeting was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Medziphema, P. James Swu, who welcomed all members and highlighted the need to strengthen the monitoring, regulation, and enforcement of riverbed mining activities in the Chathe River and its tributaries. He emphasized the responsibilities of the enforcement committee, stating that their goal should be to protect and revive the Chathe River and its tributaries.
Representatives from the Department of Geology & Mining and the Forest Department also clarified their roles and responsibilities during the meeting. Pherima Gaon Bura voiced their grievances and explained how mining is affecting local communities and the agriculture sector in the area. The meeting discussed the current status of riverbed mining in the Chathe River, ongoing mining activities, review of existing permits and licenses, and actions against illegal mining.
Community concerns and grievances were addressed, focusing on the impact of mining on local communities, agriculture, and livelihoods. Key discussion points also included routine inspections of the Chathe riverbed, action plans, and the assignment of responsibilities to specific departments.
The meeting also decided to clean and decorate all villages under Medziphema Sub-division for beautification during the festive season. The meeting was attended by all members of the enforcement committee.
