The Meitei Leepun (ML) on Wednesday warmly welcomed the return of NSCN-IM chief Thuingaleng Muivah to his ancestral village in Manipur, describing it as “a moment of deep emotional and historical significance for the people of Manipur.” Muivah, who had been away for over 50 years, visited Somdal in Ukhrul district, his ancestral home.
“We warmly welcome the visit of Thuingaleng Muivah – not only a respected leader of the Naga people but an inspirational and visionary figure admired across communities – to his village and his motherland, Manipur,” the ML statement said, signed by its chief M. Pramot Singh. The ML described the authorities’ decision to allow the 91-year-old leader’s visit as “a wise and compassionate decision.”
Muivah last attempted to visit his village in 2010 but was stopped by the then Congress government led by O. Ibobi Singh, which had created tension in the state. The ML noted that Muivah’s long-standing leadership has guided generations through struggles from the colonial era to the post-Independence period. “His life’s journey reflects conviction, identity, and the awakening of indigenous consciousness,” the statement said.
The ML expressed hope that Muivah’s visit would strengthen the bond between Nagas and Meiteis, promote dialogue, and reaffirm collective commitment to peace, unity, and coexistence in Manipur. “The beauty of Manipur lies in its diversity, and our shared future depends on preserving that diversity with dignity and respect… Every son of the soil deserves a heartfelt welcome and gratitude,” the statement added.
