The proposed inland waterway linking Myanmar’s Chindwin River to Nagaland’s Tizu River is set to be a game-changer in regional trade and connectivity. Governor La Ganesan, during his visit to Meluri district on March 28, underscored the significance of this project, stating that it will serve as a vital trade link with Southeast Asia, positioning Meluri as an international trade hub.

In addition to the waterway project, the Governor highlighted the role of the International Trade Centre at Avangkhu in reinforcing Nagaland’s position as a gateway to ASEAN nations. He emphasized that these developments would not only enhance economic opportunities for the region but also boost infrastructural growth and connectivity.
Addressing the people of Meluri, Governor Ganesan expressed optimism about the district’s future, calling it “the Land of Fortunes” due to its rich mineral resources, biodiversity, and tourism potential. He acknowledged Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s leadership in officially inaugurating Meluri as Nagaland’s newest district on February 21, 2025, and congratulated the people on their progress.
“The youngest district of our state holds immense promise for a bright future,” the Governor remarked. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving road and transport infrastructure, particularly enhancing connectivity between Meluri, the state capital, and Avangkhu at the Myanmar border. These improvements, he noted, will facilitate trade, economic growth, and better access to essential services.
However, Governor Ganesan stressed that infrastructure alone is not enough to drive development. “It is the people, their unity, and their collective spirit that turn vision into reality,” he said, urging citizens, government departments, and organizations to actively participate in the region’s growth. He also emphasized the need for quality education and healthcare, calling for well-equipped hospitals and schools to nurture future leaders and innovators.
The Governor appealed for peace and cooperation, reminding the people that their demand for a separate district had been met. “Now, I appeal to you to heed the government’s call for peace, cooperation, and unwavering dedication to development,” he stated.
Aligning his message with the national vision for progress, Governor Ganesan reiterated the importance of collective efforts in achieving ‘Viksit Bharat 2047,’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed India by 2047. He encouraged the people of Meluri to set an example by ensuring that security, tradition, and development go hand in hand.
“The whole state and even the country are watching Meluri today,” he concluded. “Let us show them that our endeavor for peace and equitable development is not just a wish but a reality.
Together, let us march towards a more developed Nagaland and India.”
