MGM College marked International Mother Language Day on February 21 with a meaningful and culturally vibrant programme organised under the theme “Multilingualism in the Present Age.” The celebration highlighted the need to preserve mother tongues and promote respect for linguistic and cultural diversity in an increasingly globalised world.

The programme was chaired by Meribemo Yanthan, who delivered the welcome address and emphasised the close link between language, culture, identity and roots. He reminded the gathering that a mother tongue is not merely a means of communication but the soul of a community.

Adding cultural depth to the event, sixth semester students presented a Mizo song that was warmly appreciated by the audience. The programme was further enriched by an address from Jemsungba Walling, Assistant Professor, Department of English and IQAC Coordinator, who highlighted the global significance of International Mother Language Day and stressed the responsibility of individuals and institutions to safeguard indigenous languages. He noted that multilingualism involves respecting and valuing the cultures embedded within languages.
