Former National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Nagaland unit president, X. Chopika Sumi, in his official Facebook page on Saturday, posted how his MNREGA job card which he claims is something he is not aware of, has recorded a list of works he had purportedly done and expressed suspicion that monetary payments might have been made against those works which he has never done.
He further said in his post that he has received several calls from villagers who shared how their village council members/VDB has been asking them to withdraw the money they received in their account and submit it to their office.
The post has been shared around in the social media platform with many users sharing how they were never aware of it while some took initiatives to find more details in their respective villages.
According to Chopika, he has filed an RTI with the Ministry of Rural Development of which he has received the reply. He then informed that hewill be detailing a video on how to check the job card and how to apply for it and the steps that need to be followed in case someone is denied their rights.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA) was notified on September 7, 2005. The mandate of the Act is to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
