The Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) has disposed of 127 packets of food items seized during routine inspections and enforcement drives after they were found to be either expired or involved in tampering of manufacturing and expiry dates.
The disposal exercise was conducted on August 7 at 3:30 pm in the presence of officials from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Mokokchung, representatives of the Dobashis and officials of the MMC.
The food items disposed of included 116 packets of sliced bread and 11 packets of doughnuts.
According to the MMC, the products had been seized after being found in violation of relevant food safety and public health regulations. The council said the items were destroyed as they posed a risk to public health and consumer safety.
The disposal was witnessed by Food Safety Officer Zhohu Puro from the Office of the CMO, Mokokchung, and Dobashis Matsungshiba and Metongmeren.
The MMC said the presence of the officials and Dobashis was intended to ensure transparency and compliance with prescribed procedures during the destruction of the seized products.
The council reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and urged traders and business establishments to comply with applicable laws and regulations governing the sale of food and consumer products.
It also appealed to the public to remain vigilant while purchasing goods and to report any suspected sale of expired, adulterated or tampered products to the concerned authorities.
