Moanungsang Memorial Sporting Club (MMSC) prides itself on nurturing local football talent, fielding a team composed entirely of players from Mokokchung town. The club focuses on under-20 players, ensuring that its squad represents the local community in both spirit and skill. In the MDFA Trophy, MMSC guarantees that all its squads consist of players from Mokokchung town.
Coach R. Achi, who has been with the club since 2003 as both player and coach, explained that MMSC dedicates two to three months each year to training young players from Mokokchung. “The club’s aim is to uplift the youth of this town through football, providing them with a platform to grow and compete,” said Achi.
He emphasized that the club has never missed participating in the Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) Trophy and always ensures its squad is made up solely of players from Mokokchung town. “We are committed to keeping the team local,” Achi noted.
MMSC won the MDFA Trophy in 2006 and 2007 and is looking for their third title since then. They were finalists in the last two editions, but lost to Telongjem FC on both occasions.
Reflecting on the latest MDFA Trophy match on Thursday against DEF Mokokchung, where MMSC made a dramatic second-half comeback to win 4-2 after being down 2-0, Achi shared his thoughts on the team’s performance. “It was their first real match after our coaching sessions, and they were understandably nervous in the first half. But once we analyzed the game, the way they came back was first-class,” said Achi.
He expressed confidence in his young team’s potential, hoping that their initial nerves will fade as they gain more experience. “I’m sure the nervousness won’t return in future games. This team has talent, and I believe in them,” he remarked.
