The district administration has directed all village councils in Mokokchung, particularly those under the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency, to strictly comply with the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) following its enforcement for the upcoming by-election.

The directive comes amid reports that certain village councils and local authorities have been engaging in political campaigning and other partisan activities, besides imposing restrictions on free movement and issuing prohibitory orders-actions deemed to be in violation of the MCC.

According to the order, village councils are required to function in accordance with their role under Section 15 of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act, 1978, which designates them as auxiliary bodies to the district administration responsible for maintaining law and order within their respective jurisdictions.

The administration stated that all councils must strictly adhere to instructions issued by competent authorities and ensure that no action is taken in contravention of the MCC or other applicable legal provisions.

It further warned that any village council member found violating the order would be liable for strict action under the provisions of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act, 1978, along with other relevant laws.
