Mokokchung College of Teacher Education (MCTE), Yimyu, organises a First of its kind Program on Awareness-Cum-E-Waste-Collection Drive in Mokokchung. In a significant step towards responsible e-waste management, Mokokchung College of Teacher Education (MCTE) organized its first-ever Awareness-Cum-E-Waste Collection Drive. The event aimed to educate the public on the pressing issue of e-waste and encourage active participation in recycling efforts.
The program was graced by Chumlamo Humtsoe, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Mokokchung and CEO of Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), as the Invited Guest. The Resource Person, Bendangwala Walling, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of e-Circle, Dimapur, shared her expertise on sustainable e-waste management.
Sekulu Nienu, Assistant Professor, MCTE, was the chairperson for the programme, and the event commenced with a Welcome Address by Dr T Alemla Longkumer, Principal of MCTE, who stressed on the growing need for responsible e-waste disposal in the Age of Electronics. She highlighted the role of individuals in tackling e-waste challenges and called for proactive engagement in recycling efforts.
Chumlamo Humtsoe shed light on the challenges faced by MMC, including limited resources and manpower, in maintaining sanitation in the town. He also informed the attendees about the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Mokokchung, which currently focuses on plastic waste management. Encouraging responsible waste disposal, he urged people to practice waste segregation at the household level as a crucial step toward effective waste management.
Resource Person Bendangwala Walling explained the importance of e-waste recycling and circular economy principles, where used products are continuously repurposed to minimize waste. She expressed her appreciation for Mokokchung’s progress in waste management and emphasized the need for continued efforts.
A highlight of the event was the successful collection of 800 to 1,000 kgs of e-waste, achieved through the collaboration between MCTE, and local stakeholders, making it one of the biggest ever collection in an awareness-cum-collection drive as reported by the e-Circle Dimapur.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Kerilhusa Peseyie, Coordinator, IQAC, MCTE, who expressed gratitude to all attendees for their enthusiastic participation.
“This eye-opening initiative not only raised awareness but also reinforced the importance of individual responsibility in addressing the growing e-waste crisis. With collective efforts, MCTE, Yimyu, Mokokchung is making strides towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future,” an update received here stated.
