Mokokchung’s restaurants, stores, and stalls were spotted plastic-free as the town encountered the first day of the latest nationwide ban on single-use plastics today. However, threat exists in the fringes or outside of the MMC jurisdiction, despite what may be considered a laudable achievement within the MMC jurisdiction.
Chuchamo Humtsoe, Addl. Deputy Commissioner and Administrator of MMC informed Mokokchung Times that a District Level Task Force meeting was conducted today at the DC’s office, with the meeting focusing on the implementation of the ban in the town’s neighbouring areas that are not under MMC’s jurisdiction. “We will need to raise awareness in all villages and towns,” he said.
“The District Level Task Force is now discussing how to raise awareness about the negative consequences of plastics in village communities,” he stated.
He also emphasized how difficult it is to dispose off plastic garbage and how MMC’s plastic compressing facility should be used.
“We must use the plastic compressing facility available with MMC, at the very least for the nearby villages like Ungma and Khensa, so that we may compress the plastic and dispose it off outside the state,” he continued.
He then stated that meetings will be held to raise awareness in the surrounding communities and to encourage people to bring their plastic waste to the facility. Following today’s District Level Task Force meeting, more notifications are expected to be issued by the district administration soon.
