The Mokokchung District Congress Committee (MDCC) has disputed a purported mass resignation of Congress workers circulating in the district, saying its internal verification found that 52 of the 61 signatures on the document could not be treated as genuine resignations from the party.
According to the DCC, 14 of the signatories are not registered members of the Indian National Congress and therefore could not resign from the party. Another 28 individuals, the committee said, have stated that they were misled or deceived into signing documents and were unaware that their signatures would subsequently be used to portray them as having resigned from Congress.
The DCC further said 10 signatures belonged to individuals whose party memberships had not been approved.
The claims were made in a statement issued by the DCC on Friday after a purported resignation letter claiming the resignation of a large number of Congress workers began circulating.
The committee said it had immediately initiated an internal verification process to establish the authenticity of the claims and subsequently completed the exercise.
Based on its findings, the DCC said the document did not accurately represent the position of Congress workers in Mokokchung and disputed the portrayal of the episode as a mass exodus from the party.
The Congress committee also alleged that attempts to represent party workers through “misrepresentation” and “deception” were serious and inconsistent with the principles of transparency and accountability in democratic engagement.
However, the DCC’s statement does not explain the status or position of the remaining nine signatures among the 61 appended to the purported resignation document.
The committee expressed gratitude to those who it said had come forward to clarify their positions and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the Congress organisation in Mokokchung.
