A Mokokchung court has sentenced a man to multiple jail terms for assaulting his wife, which led to her death in December 2018 at Arkong Ward. The victim was admitted to Lenjem Hospital by her family but tragically succumbed to her injuries.

The accused, Imkongtemjen, was convicted by Victo Sema, NJS, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Mokokchung, for multiple offences, including voluntarily causing grievous hurt, assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation, and culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Sections 325, 352, and 304 Part II of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) respectively.

According to the judgement passed on 28 August 2025, the court sentenced Imkongtemjen to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment (R.I.) and imposed a fine of Rs. 2,000 for voluntarily causing grievous hurt under Section 325 IPC. (Grievous hurt refers to serious injuries inflicted on a person, such as those causing long-term harm or disfigurement.)

3 months RI for assault under Section 352 IPC. (This section covers assault or use of criminal force on another person without grave provocation.)

10 years RI for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 Part II IPC. (This refers to causing death with the intention of causing bodily injury likely to result in death, but without the premeditation required for murder.)

The court also ordered that in case the fine is not paid, the accused would undergo an additional 3 months of simple imprisonment (S.I.). All sentences are to run concurrently, meaning the accused will serve them at the same time.
