Thsuvisie Phoji, the Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer of Mokokchung, has issued a stern warning to all residents regarding fraudulent practices in the voter registration process. The notice specifically addressed applications submitted under Form 6, cautioning individuals against submitting false images, fraudulent documents, or bogus voter information. Such actions are deemed serious violations of electoral law and threaten the integrity of the electoral process, it said.
Phoji referred to Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, which stipulates legal penalties for those knowingly submitting false information or documents in voter registration applications. According to the section, any individual making a false claim related to electoral rolls may face imprisonment for up to one year, a fine, or both.
To maintain the accuracy of the Electoral Roll, the Deputy Commissioner outlined several measures. Any Form 6 application found to include misleading information will be immediately rejected. Those involved in submitting or assisting with fraudulent applications may face legal consequences, including imprisonment and fines. Furthermore, offenders may be barred from future applications for inclusion in the electoral roll.
All Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) have been directed to rigorously verify all applications to ensure adherence to electoral regulations. Any applications suspected of containing false information have been asked to be reported immediately for further action.
Residents and political representatives have also been urged to ensure that all applications for inclusion in the electoral roll are genuine and compliant with electoral laws. The Deputy Commissioner reiterated that the submission of false information or documents would lead to strict legal repercussions, emphasizing the importance of integrity in the electoral process.
