The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Mokokchung, has continued monitoring and coordinating relief and restoration measures following widespread damage caused by incessant rainfall across the district.
According to the disaster situation update issued on August 4, DDMA officials visited affected villages and sub-divisions up to August 2 to assess the situation and assist local administrations. All administrative sub-divisions and departments were directed to submit damage and situation reports for necessary action.
The relief camps established at Tuli Town Hall and the Industry Office under the Relief Camp Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) were officially closed on August 4 following an order from the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Tuli.
The camps had provided round-the-clock services including medical assistance, SDRF personnel for search and rescue, police security, social welfare support for persons with disabilities, elderly persons, women and children, power and transport services, Fire and Emergency Services, counselling support from churches and NGOs, tuition and study facilities through the Education Department, and food services.
In Tuli Sub-Division, 430 housing damages were reported, while assessment of completely, severely and partially damaged houses is ongoing. Road restoration was completed at Kangtsung and Wamaken, while damage reports were received from several locations including Anaki C, Merangkong, Asangma and Tzudikong ward. Damage assessment in the agriculture and allied sector is also underway, with 45 cases reported so far.
Water supply restoration is in progress after damage to GI pipes from three water sources, namely Sungkotsung, Tsutotok and Longkikum.
In Mangkolemba Sub-Division, eight families were affected due to housing damage in Changki, Warumong, Yimjenkimong and Mangkolemba town. DDMA has extended emergency relief, and affected families will apply for assistance under the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Several road stretches remain under restoration, including Molungkimong-Warumong-Yimjenkimong-Yajang C and other affected areas.
A government high school at Lirmen village reported damage, while landslides destroyed GI pipelines affecting water supply to Aosungkum village under Tsurangkong. Power infrastructure was also affected at various locations under Longnak Electrical Sub-Division between July 19 and 21, including the 33KV Watiyim feeder, 33KV Longchem feeder and 11KV Yajang feeder.
In Mokokchung Sadar, housing damage was reported at Artang ward, while road-related damages were reported at Arkong, Penli and Marepkong wards. The Penli landslide incident resulted in the deaths of two students and minor injury to their mother. DDMA provided emergency relief to the affected family, handed over ex-gratia assistance to the next of kin of the deceased, and provided gratuitous relief to the injured mother under SDRF norms.
Changtongya Sub-Division reported road blockages affecting Unger, Changtongya and Kelingmen, with restoration works continuing. Relief assistance was provided to stranded and affected families.
In Chuchuyimlang Division, damage was reported at Salulemang village, with preparation of an alternative route underway. Kubolong Circle reported housing damage at Longjang village, with emergency relief extended to the affected family.
The Ongpangkong Circle also reported a landslide on the National Highway below Ungma, with further assessment awaited.
According to the DDMA update, restoration works are continuing in several affected areas, while damage assessments and reports from different sectors are still being compiled.
Landslides hit Mokokchung town; heavy vehicles barred on Watiyongpang-Changtongya NH-2 stretch
On the evening of August 4, two minor landslides were reported in Artang Ward of Mokokchung town. The first occurred along the Sewak Gate to Hospital road via Artang Ward. In another incident, a vehicle was damaged after falling debris struck it following the collapse of a retaining wall due to heavy rainfall. Further details were awaited at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the ADC Tuli has imposed a ban on the movement of all heavy vehicles along the Watiyongpang-Changtongya stretch of NH-2 with immediate effect until further orders. The restriction was enforced following severe damage to the road caused by floods and landslides on July 19. The decision was taken based on safety recommendations from the PWD (NH) and PWD (R&B), Tuli Division.
