The Mokokchung District Sports Council (MDSC) on Monday felicitated the Nagaland Olympic and Paralympic Games (NOPG) 2024 medal winners from the district at Deputy Commissioner Conference Hall. The NOPG 2024 was held in Dimapur and Chümoukedima districts earlier this year from 12 to 17 February.
During the felicitation program, the Games report was presented by the District Sports Officer, Mokokchung. He reported that Mokokchung athletes bagged 27 medals including 7 gold, 7 silver, and 13 bronze.
The athletes were felicitated with the certificates and a cash prize of Rs 10000, Rs 7000, and Rs 5000 for group categories and Rs 3000, Rs 2000, and Rs 1000 for individual categories.
In his speech, Deputy Commissioner and President of MDSC, Thsuvisie Phoji, extended congratulations to the athletes, coaches, and various sports associations for their diligent efforts in securing medals and bringing honor to the district. This was the district’s best performance in the NOPG so far.
Expressing regret over the limited financial support available to athletes due to resource constraints, he assured them that MDSC would endeavor to enhance resources in the field of sports.
Despite Mokokchung achieving 7th place in the medal tally, he encouraged athletes not to be disheartened but rather urged them to set higher goals and work harder to achieve better results in the future. He emphasized the importance of self-confidence as a tool to confront and overcome challenges, while also striving to reclaim Mokokchung’s title as a “powerhouse” in sports.
Mokokchung district sent a 211-strong contingent to the NOPG 2024 who participated in 14 disciplines. The contingent included 123 male athletes, 49 female athletes, 37 male officials and 2 female officials.
