The District Youth Congress (DYC) of Mokokchung on Saturday carried out a poster campaign in Mokokchung town in protest against growing unemployment in the country and the government’s failure to mitigate the problem. DYC Mokokchung general secretary (Admin), Temsu when asked about the reason behind the poster campaign said that the Indian Youth Congress was protesting against the surging unemployment rate across the country and that DYC Mokokchung along with the Nagaland Youth Congress was also participating in the campaign. He also said that the day, which coincides with the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was being observed as ‘National Unemployment Day’ all over India by the IYC since the past several years.
The Congress youth leader also told Mokokchung Times that Modi made the “fake promise” of creating 2 crore jobs and that more than 45% of youth in India today were unemployed. He also claimed that Nagaland has the highest youth unemployment rate in the country. He also stated that the government does not care about the unemployed youth but was only concerned about elections and toppling state governments. He also claimed that the Modi government’s demonetization and nation-wide lockdown without proper planning contributed to the rising unemployment rate in the country.
Some of the posters that the DYC used in the campaign today read “12 Crore Indians lost their jobs in just one month due to PM Modi’s unplanned lockdown”; “Pandemic didn’t destroy employment, BJP did”; “Why has the Modi government pushed our youth into this catastrophic crisis?” and “National Unemployment Day, September 17. Happy Birthday Prime Minister.”
