As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, the Mokokchung Forest Division observed World Ozone Day on September 13 under the theme, “Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action,” underscoring the vital role the ozone layer plays in sustaining life on Earth. The event, held at the Forest Office in Marepkong, saw the participation of teachers and students from Government Middle School Marepkong.

According to a press release from the Divisional Forest Officer, Mokokchung, the ozone layer, a thin shield in the stratosphere, protects the planet by absorbing most of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This natural barrier is essential in preventing UV-related health issues such as skin cancer and cataracts, as well as safeguarding wildlife and ecosystems, it noted. Despite international regulations, some regions continue to face challenges with the illegal use of ozone-depleting substances, it added.

“As we commemorate World Ozone Day, we urge everyone to join us in reinforcing our commitment to a healthier planet. Small actions, such as using eco-friendly products, supporting sustainable practices, and staying informed about environmental issues, can collectively make a significant impact,” it read.

Aosungla Imsong, Forest Ranger, chaired the event, which began with an introduction between the Forest department officials, GMS Marepkong students and teachers. A brief introduction was also given on the celebration of World Ozone Day before the start of the program.

The program also featured a PowerPoint presentation by Tiatemsula Imchen, also a Forest Ranger, who explained the causes, effects, and potential solutions for ozone depletion and protecting the earth from ultraviolet rays. She stressed that limiting vehicle use, reducing pesticides, embracing Reuse & Recycle, and prioritizing renewable energy and tree planting were crucial steps toward protecting the ozone layer. Students were encouraged to take individual responsibility for protecting the environment amd contribute towards this common goal.

A short educational video was shown by Temsuwapang, Assistant Accountant, who demonstrated virtual reality (VR) headsets to enhance learning. The students also participated in a quiz on environmental issues, including deforestation and forest fires. Talimeren Ao, Convergence Expert, highlighted the importance of trees and discussed major tree species in Mokokchung District.

The celebration was a successful and meaningful opportunity for students to learn about the importance of the ozone layer and environmental stewardship.
