Mokokchung, 19 October (MTNews): The hospital authorities of Dr. Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital, Mokokchung and the Chest Diseases & TB Hospital, Mokokchung as well as the Mokokchung Town Lanur Teongjem (MTNT) have expressed deep concern and condemnation regarding the recent incident where damage to hospital property was caused by a mob on the evening of 18 October 2023.
The Medical Superintendents of IMDH and the Chest Diseases & TB Hospital in a joint statement said that such acts of violence and vandalism not only endanger the wellbeing of patients and staff but also inflict lasting damage on vital healthcare infrastructure that serves the community in times of need.
“Hospitals are sanctuaries of healing, places where compassion and care should prevail over chaos and destruction,” they said, adding, “The reprehensible behaviour exhibited by the mob not only undermines the values of respect, empathy and cooperation that are at the core of any civilized society but also jeopardize the healthcare ecosystem.”
“We hope and pray that all individuals and organizations will condemn such acts and care for public property as their own personal property so that such acts can be prevented in the future,” they added.
Meanwhile, the Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) has also condemned the “unruly mob that vandalized the IMDH hospital properties” on 18 October evening.
“Such vandalism of a place of healing is totally unwarranted and unacceptable under any circumstance,” the MTLT maintained. It also stated that such unruly action has created a fear psychosis in the minds of the health workers in the hospital and that it might have had a negative impact on the fragile health of the patients admitted there.
“Therefore, all right thinking citizens or organizations, wherever it might be, should detest from attacking public places, especially healthcare institutions, as it would ultimately hurt the general wellbeing of the public,” the MTLT said. The MTLT went on to say that it “deeply regrets the turn of events over the past couple of days” and hoped that good sense shall prevail as the people await the law enforcing agencies to deliver justice.
