The ongoing Mokokchung Inter-Ward Football Tournament 2024 witnessed an epic nail-biting encounter in the first semifinal match as two former champions, Artang Ward and Mongsenbai Ward, battled it out at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex on Wednesday. The closely contested match ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw after regulation time, forcing extra time. Still deadlocked, the fate of the finalists came down to a dramatic penalty shootout decided by sudden death.
The first half of the evenly poised match ended in a goalless draw as both teams played cautiously. However, the tension escalated in the second half as Tongpangnokdang netted the first goal for Artang in the 59th minute, followed by another goal from Chubalemba.
However, Mongsenbai, the 2022 champions, refused to back down. Imnatoshi stepped up for his team, scoring a remarkable brace to equalize the score.
The fate of the match hung in the balance but only one of the two teams was to make it to the final. Ultimately, Artang emerged victorious in a dramatic sudden-death penalty shootout, winning the match 2-2 (7-6).
Artang ward will now face the winner of the second semifinal match to be played on 21 March between the 2019 champions Arkong ward and Sungkomen ward, a strong contender vying for their first-ever title.
