The 2nd Mokokchung Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament 2023 reached its thrilling culmination as Kumlong Ward triumphed over Artang Ward in an exhilarating final match that left spectators on the edge of their seats.
The match kicked off with the resilient Artang making a powerful start, capturing the first set with a score of 25-19. However, the host team, Kumlong, exhibited unyielding determination and a remarkable fighting spirit. Led by standout performances from Sademmeren and Reshitemjen, Kumlong turned the tide in their favor, securing victory in the subsequent three sets with a score line 25-19,25-18 and 25-22.
Despite their valiant efforts, Artang had to be content as the runners-up for the second consecutive time.
The tournament was organized by the Kumlong Sporting Association under the aegis of the Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA).
During the closing ceremony earlier in the evening, Imlikokba Longkumer, District Planning Officer, Mokokchung, graced the event as the Guest of Honor. In his address, he commended the dedicated efforts of the organizing committee in bringing the tournament to fruition. The Guest of Honor highlighted the tournament’s pivotal role in nurturing emerging talent and fostering camaraderie among players from diverse wards. He underscored the importance of unity, understanding, and relationships forged through spirited competitions. Encouraging both winners and competitors who fell short, he urged them to harness their skills and return even stronger in the forthcoming year.
As the champions, Kumlong Ward received the coveted trophy, certificates, and a cash prize of Rs 30,000. Displaying remarkable resilience, Artang secured the runners-up position for the second consecutive year, earning a well-deserved prize of Rs 20,000 along with trophies and certificates.
Individual accolades were also distributed. Reshitemjen from Kumlong was named the Player of the Tournament, while Sademmeren from the same team was recognized as the Best Spiker. Limatenzuk from Yimyu secured the title of Best Setter.
In the semifinals leading up to the final match, the clash between Artang and Yimyu captured attention. In this gripping best-of-five encounter, a youthful Yimyu squad clinched the first set with a score of 25-23, led by Imlionen. However, Artang executed a dramatic comeback, seizing the second set with a score of 25-19. Demonstrating their experience, Artang managed to hold off the spirited Yimyu team in the subsequent sets, securing victories with scores of 25-21 and 25-10 in the third and fourth sets, respectively.
In the second semifinal, defending champions Sungkomen faced off against host team Kumlong. The opening set was secured by Kumlong with a score of 25-21, driven by the contributions of Reshitemjen and Tsuknungtemjen. In the second set, Kumlong’s spiking prowess led by Sademmeren combined with Reshitemjen’s experience that resulted in a 25-20 victory for the host team. Sungkomen showcased their championship spirit by rallying from behind to clinch the third set with a score of 25-20. However, in the fourth set, Kumlong triumphed with a score of 25-21.
The tournament also featured a Super Spiker contest where two spikers from each team participated. In this thrilling contest, Akumnuchet from Yimyu emerged as the victor.
