Mokokchung Law College, established in 1981, is located near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Complex and the court of Principal District and Session Judge, Mokokchung. The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) is the proprietor of the college and the same is being managed by the Mokokchung Law College Managing Board. The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang conceived in 1929 with the theme, ‘For the Nation’ is the apex student body of the Ao Nagas.
The story of its establishment began with the Ao Student’s Conference (AKM) celebrating its Golden Jubilee in 1979 where the need to establish a law college in the district was resolved. Consequently, Mokokchung Law College in 1981. The uniqueness of the college is that its foundation stood on the understanding and contribution by every household in Mokokchung district and people across Nagaland.
The founding faculty members of the college included Lt. Tajenyuba as the first principal, Mr. Metongmeren, Mr. Sosang and Mr. Imzungluba as the lecturers.
Mokokchung Law College (MLC) was first affiliated with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). However, with the bifurcation of Nagaland University (NU) from NEHU in 1994, the MLC affiliation was transferred to NU in the same year. Further, in 1997, the Bar Council of India (BCI) gave its due recognition of law degree to MLC.
The college is funded by Mokokchung Law College Corpus Fund, donations from well-wishers, revenue from the students during admission, tuition, library and miscellaneous fee for an academic session. The college is also assisted by the government of Nagaland in the form of Grant-in-aid.
So far, the college has produced 121 Law Degree holders. At present, a total of 49 students are enrolled.
The governing body of the college has 13 members chaired by the DC. It has three separate buildings with sufficient classrooms and library, a moot court and a conference hall. Presently, there are seven faculty members with Mr. I. Mango Jamir as the principal of the college, lecturers Mr. Edison Mattai, Mr. Hemant Rai, Ms. Mapujungla, Ms. Chubarenla, Mr. Molodongba and Office Assistant, Mr. Akang. In the absence of any Government Law College in Nagaland, MLC caters the students of Mokokchung and the nearby districts with easily accessible legal education.
