During the recently held DPDB meeting, the ADC Mokokchung Chumlamo Humtsoe shed light on pressing concerns regarding the Town Graveyard in Mokokchung. Humtsoe highlighted the critical issue of insufficient space for new burials in the current site, prompting the formation of a committee to address the matter.

“The graveyard is almost exhausted, and there is no more space. We cannot acquire an alternative land for the graveyard,” Humtsoe told Mokokchung Times.

To tackle this challenge, a comprehensive plan has been devised, involving the demolition of existing structures and land excavation.

“We will be issuing notice to the families of those deceased, providing them with the option to relocate the remains. In cases where families opt not to relocate, a memorial will be constructed, featuring the names of the deceased on a memorial wall,” he said.

“The reclaimed land will then be utilized for new burials, with a structured approach to optimize space. The lower part of the site will be designated for burials, while the upper part will feature uniform-size epitaphs for each deceased individual, ensuring a judicious use of the available land,” added Humtsoe.

The ADC emphasized, “As for funding, we are planning to reach out to the elected members. These are the plans. Hopefully, they materialize; otherwise, we will be left without a dumping site and a burial site.”
